Eugene Opera presents Eugene Onegin by Piotr Tchaikovsky.

Eugene Onegin tells the tale of a man who rejects a young woman’s passionate offer of love, betrays a good and loyal friend, and only later realizes that he himself is the chief victim of his own cold heart.

This celebrated Russian opera is a musically sumptuous realization of Alexander Pushkin’s immortal Russian novel in verse.

Eugene Opera presents Little Women by Mark Adamo.

Louisa May Alcott’s beloved story of the lives of the four March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy — as they pass from childhood into womanhood is brilliantly brought to the stage through Adamo’s libretto and music.

While the novel on which it is based has long been a children’s favorite, this beautiful American work is most definitely not a children’s opera. It is suitable for children, but it speaks more directly to those who have experienced enough of life to appreciate its bittersweet message.

From Shakespeare to Berlioz, with Love @ Downtown Eugene Public Library
Oct 11 @ 6:00 pm

Eugene Opera opens its 40th anniversary season with Hector Berlioz’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing — in the 400th anniversary year of the bard. In his opera, Beatrice and Benedict, Berlioz highlights the two proud lovers’ “merry war” and their eventual union. Roberts will compare the opera and the play, and illustrative scenes will be performed by players from Fools Haven Shakespeare company, including Richard Leebrick, Tracy Ilene Miller and Joe Cronin. All is not straightforward. For example, Berlioz omits the darker subplot of Shakespeare’s play.
